Updated over a week ago

Before you start

Things you need to know:

  • You must create an API user in Dotdigital before you can complete the connection process.

Learn more in Create an API user.

Connect your accounts

There are four steps to connecting your Dotdigital and Fresh Relevance accounts:

1. Add API user credentials

Before you start

  1. In Fresh Relevance, expand the User menu and go to Settings > Triggers and messaging integrations > Dotdigital API users.

  2. Select CONNECT API USER.

  3. In the Connect Dotdigital API user popover:

    1. Copy the API user email from Dotdigital into the API email field.

    2. For API password, enter the password for your Dotdigital account.

    3. For Description, add a short piece of text to identify the connection, for example, the name of the Dotdigital account you’re connecting to.

    4. Expand the Region drop-down menu and select the region of your Dotdigital account.
R1 for EMEA, R2 for America, R3 for JAPAC. If you’re unsure, in Dotdigital, expand the User menu and go to Settings > Access > API users. Your region is displayed in the API endpoint URL in the banner at the top of the page.

  4. Select CONNECT.

You’re taken to the Overview page for the connection, and can see that API user is marked with a green Connected flag.

2. Configure the messaging channel

To continue with the connection:

  1. For Messaging providers, select CONTINUE.

  2. Your API user credentials are pre-filled so you don’t need to edit them. Optionally, enter a descriptive name for the messaging channel to help you identify it later.

  3. Select NEXT.

Default settings

In this section, there are some optional settings you can configure.

  1. If you want to set a default list for contacts to be added to in Dotdigital, expand the Default list drop-down menu and select the list you want to use.
You can change this later if you want.

  2. If you want to add a fallback campaign, which is sent in the event that a trigger program runs without a campaign ID specified, expand the Default campaign drop-down menu and select the triggered campaign you want to use.
As long as your Fresh Relevance account is correctly configured, it’s unlikely this campaign would ever be used.

  3. If you want to test your trigger program email messaging, you can enter a test email address in the Catch-all email address field.

When this field contains an email address, no emails are sent to any other email addresses, so this should only be used for testing purposes. Once your testing is complete and you’re ready to send to live contacts, you must remove the Catch-all email address.

Contact management

This section allows you to control how existing and new contacts are managed.

  1. Expand the Permission check list drop-down menu and select the Dotdigital list to use to check that contacts have provided consent to be sent marketing emails.
In most cases, this is your Subscribers list.

  2. Expand the Existing contacts drop-down menu and choose from:

    • Do not change the subscription status stored on Dotdigital.

    • Overwrite current status in Dotdigital with Subscribed.
If you select this option, unsubscribed contacts in Dotdigital are immediately resubscribed.

  3. Expand the New contacts drop-down menu and choose from:

    • Add the contact with a status of subscribed

    • Add the contact with a status of unsubscribed

This setting determines the email subscription status that is set in Dotdigital when a new contact is imported from Fresh Relevance.

  4. Expand the New contact opt-in type drop-down menu and choose from:

    • Load new contacts with Unknown opt-in type

    • Load new contacts with Single opt-in type

    • Load new contacts with Double opt-in type

    • Load new contacts with Verified double opt-in type

If new contacts are added to Dotdigital with a Verified double opt-in type, they are added to the Pending contacts list in Dotdigital and are automatically sent an opt-in confirmation email. Once they click the confirmation link in this email, they are added to your live contact list in Dotdigital.

Send permissions

  1. To restrict email sends only to contacts who have an opt-in type of Verified double, select the Only send to contacts with Verified double opt-in checkbox.

  2. To restrict email sends only to contacts who already exist in your Dotdigital account at the point of import from Fresh Relevance, select the Only send to existing Dotdigital contacts checkbox.

Once you’re happy with your messaging channel configuration, select NEXT.
