Use Dotdigital campaigns in trigger programs

Send Dotdigital triggered email campaigns based on events tracked in Fresh Relevance.

Updated this week

You can create trigger programs for any number of events that your Fresh Relevance script is configured to track. There are three standard trigger program templates automatically created in all new accounts for the following events:

  • Cart abandonment

  • Browse abandonment

  • Purchase completion

You can also choose to create additional, more customized, trigger programs.

For each trigger program, you can choose how many messages to send, as well as define the content of those messages. When your Fresh Relevance and Dotdigital accounts are connected, you can create and design triggered email campaigns in Dotdigital, and send these through a Fresh Relevance trigger program.

Include a cart layout in a Dotdigital triggered email

You can use cart layouts to display products that visitors to your site have browsed, placed in their cart, or purchased. When a triggered email is sent, the cart layout is populated with the most recent data for the contact and displayed in the email campaign you have selected.

Learn more in the Cart layout section of the Help Center.

To include a cart layout in a Dotdigital email, you can use an External dynamic content (EDC) block. You add the EDC endpoint for a Fresh Relevance cart layout to your EDC block, then, in the settings of the trigger program, you select which specific cart layout you want to display.

The EDC endpoint URL remains the same for any cart layout, so you don’t need to create multiple Dotdigital campaigns to display different cart layouts to different contacts. You can use a singe campaign and just select the desired cart layout for each trigger program.

To locate the EDC endpoint for cart layouts in Fresh Relevance:

  1. Go to Content > Cart Layout.

  2. Hover over a cart layout and select VIEW.

  3. Under Including the Cart Layout in your Cart/Browse Abandonment messages, copy the URL for the cart layout endpoint.

    This looks something like: https://a1.abcde.net/ab12cdef/content/email/?k=abcdef1&f=cart_html&e=@EMAIL@

  4. In Dotdigital, enter this URL to the URL endpoint field of the EDC block.

When the triggered email is sent, Dotdigital fetches the cart contents you specify in the trigger program settings from Fresh Relevance and merges it into the email.

Testing external dynamic content

When you are testing your email template in Dotdigital, the personalized content doesn’t display if you use the test send function. To view the content, select PREVIEW and then select PREVIEW WITH DYNAMIC CONTENT for the EDC block you want to view.

You can also make a live send to your test or internal contacts to check that the external dynamic content is working correctly.
