Pinterest SmartBlocks

Pinterest SmartBlocks include real-time images of content from a public Pinterest board in your emails and on your website.

Updated over 6 months ago

Individual images in a Pinterest SmartBlock allow visitors to click through to the location that the content was originally pinned from, whether that is an Instagram post, a page from your website, or elsewhere.

Example use cases:

  • Display the most recent pin from a Deal of the Day board in your email signature, so that customers can click through to the store page it was pinned from and buy immediately.

  • Display a random selection of pins from a seasonal trend board, for a mix and match effect.

Setup

  1. Go to Content > SmartBlocks.

  2. Select the Pinterest tab.

  3. Select CREATE SMARTBLOCK.

  4. Hover over the layout you want for your SmartBlock, then select CREATE.

Layout

The Layout tab allows you to set text, colors, fonts, and font sizes for the SmartBlock’s call to action and caption, as well as the number of columns to display, and the background color you want to use for the pins.

Mergeable Pin data

In most of the layouts available for Pinterest SmartBlocks, the only data we use from the Pin is the thumbnail image and the description. If you want to use any other data from Pinterest, select Edit next to the Layout drop-down menu, and type in the appropriate merge field(s) from the list below.

Merge Field

Properties

Once you have created your SmartBlock, and defined its layout, you can select the Properties tab to configure it.

  1. Enter a name for your SmartBlock.

  2. The Dynamic (Metered) check box is selected by default. Pinterest SmartBlocks must be dynamic.

  3. Optionally, add tags to group this SmartBlock with others of your choice.
For SmartBlock management and reporting purposes.

  4. Enter a redirect URL for when a visitor clicks on the feed.
By default, this field is set to {{item.link}}, which redirects the visitor to the page the content was pinned from. Leave blank to default to the Pinterest board the content was pinned to.

  5. Enter the UTM tagsutm_source, utm_campaign and utm_medium — you want to use to track clicks on this SmartBlock.

  6. Enter any merge parameters that you want to allow in the Slot query string.

Personalization

All Pinterest SmartBlocks must be dynamic (metered), which means that all the data in the person record is available to use. For example, you might want to include a personalized code in the redirect URL for your analytics tool to track.

Data source

Select the Data Source tab to set the name and board properties for your Pinterest SmartBlock.

  1. Enter a Pinner name.

  2. Enter the name of the Pinterest board you want to use in the SmartBlock.
The Pinner name and board name can be found in the URL of the board. For example, if you want to display content from the board at pinterest.com/cartcontents/tech-products/, the Pinner would be cartcontents and the Pinterest board name would be tech-products.

  3. Enter the number of pins for the SmartBlock to display.

  4. Select the Shuffle check box to display a random selection of the 40 most recent pins from the board you have specified.

  5. Once you’re happy with the configuration of your SmartBlock, select:

    • PUBLISH AND EXIT
To save your changes and exit to the SmartBlocks page.

    • PUBLISH AND USE
To save your changes and be directed to the Use page for the SmartBlock.

    • PUBLISH

To save your changes and continue editing.

Content from secret boards can’t currently be accessed from a SmartBlock.
